Water Storage Tank
The new water storage tank has been completed!
The old water storage tank had become unreliable and past its useful service life. The Town of Leader began planning for a new tank in 2022 and construction was completed in October of 2024. The construction of a new tank was important to prevent any disruptions to water services. The new tank has the same holding capacity as the former tank.
In addition to the new water tank, the Town was able to complete some other updates at the water treatment plant with the funding received. The Town has installed a new bulk water fill system, which will require a key fob to operate or payment, on-site, with a credit card. An autmation system is slated to be completed by March 2025, which will assist in the additional system checks as regulated by the Water Security Agency. The final upgrade to be completed is to the distribution header, it is showing signs of rust and near the end of its useful life.
Funding for the new tank was made possible by money collected through a monthly infrastrucutre fee charged on utility bills, through the Investing in Canada Infrastrucutre Grant and other revenue sources. The storage tank comes with a price tag of $1.9 million dollars, of which 73.33% or $1.4 million will be covered through the ICIP Grant. The Town of Leader is responsible for the remaining $511,000. The Town plans to use funds from the utility reserves and revenues to cover the costs but with additional utility projects still needing to be completed, a loan will be required to cover a portion of the project expenses.
